Jamón Jamón - Bigas Luna - 1992
Jamón Jamón is film with complex ideas, images, messages and relationships. The film follows a beautiful young woman Silvia (Penelope Cruz) as she finds out she is pregnant with her wealthy boyfriends baby, the narrative then stems from this as the mother protests and enlists a local model to seduce Silvia resulting in her son being free of her. However this interference results in a tragic ending for all involved. Jamón Jamón through this explores the selfish desire of individuals, everybody wants something but not everyone can have what they want. This is conveyed in the conflicts and violence of the film as everyone is left needing and broken hearted.

Death Proof - Quentin Tarantino - 2007
Death Proof is a classic kick ass film. Although not to the same standard as Tarantino’s other films, Death Proof still works as a badass cult film. The style is similar to other Tarantino films, the old school music and dramatic opening sequences, long scenes in which the characters have complex conversations around a table and the brutal over the top violence. The second half of the film follows a different set of protangonists from the first. The women are independent and tough and immediately likeable, without retelling the film the end scene is a classic revenge conclusion; the women literally kick ass and the gratuious violence although bloody is extremely satisfying. Death Proof is by no means a classic in comparison of Tarantino’s other films but it’s an enjoyable guilty pleasure. Its good to see Tarantine giving the cast to women again , it’s like a female Reseviour Dogs - not directly but the badass female characters do resemble the motley crew of thugs in Dogs. Death Proof is a obvious Tarantino film and whilst not the best, still worth watching.

According To Greta (UK Title Surviving Summer) - Nancy Bardawil - 2009
Surviving Summer has all the conventions of typical teen romance dramas, the outcast girl, dysfunctional family, boy from the wrong side of the tracks. But there’s a surprising depth to Surviving Summer that stops it from being a write off teen flick. The way the sensitive subject matter of suicide is dealt with stops it from being a film devoid of anything real. The protagonist Greta is contemplating suicide simply because she thinks life finishes when you’re 18 and after that you’re just waiting to die. The film constantly treats this theory as ridiculous even as Greta is determined on her plan. This relatable portrayal of teen angst and isolation creates an image of the ability to cope, giving the film a hopeful and optimistic atmosphere. The cinematography too is different to the bland styles of generic teen flicks, instead taking the time to select the right location and detail within the frame. Surviving Summer although not a film to change someones life is still an enjoyable and refreshing take on a teen flick.

I seem to literally just be watching foreign films at the moment. I’m not sure why, but I’ve just really been in the mood for world cinema lately. But it won’t last long and I have a pile of new releases that I haven’t watched since I brought them, so there won’t be too many more foreign film reviews!

Sex and Lucia - Julio Medem - 2001
As the title would suggest a lot of the film revolves around sex. However it’s not there simply gratuitously. The sex in Sex and Lucia reflects the intensity of emotions within the film. Without ruining the plot, sex acts as motif, a visiual symbol of love, lust, desperation and isolation, it’s what connects the characters. The cinematography is unshowy and presents the juxtaposition of landscapes, the bustling Madrid and the sparse and beautiful Island. Sex and Lucia is film that presents it’s purpose simply and compellingly.

In The Mood For Love - Wong Kar Wai - 2000
There is beauty within every single shot of In The Mood For Love. The cinematography, costume and mise en scene blend perfectly creating a visual masterpiece. Kar Wai mixes long static close ups that focus on simple but significant detail: the moving of lips whilst talking on the phone and contrasts it with wide sweeping shots of the breathtaking landscape of the iconic Phnom Penh. However the whole film is layered in ambiguity and there is no resolution or seeming no goal in the first place. This distracts from the visual beauty and limits the amount of connection and understanding of the characters. Although the sides of the characters we do see are a perfect collaboration with the reality presented in the film, that being the revelation of cheating spouses and the world this then creates for the husband and wife left behind. In The Mood For Love is a film of extreme visual beauty and this perhaps is more important than the ambiguous narrative.
